glassWing* recording studio officially started in 1981 in the Washington DC area. That was the days of analogue, when tape recorders were as big as washing machines and a 'sampler' was a box of chocolates. glassWing was at the headwaters of the eventual torrent of small studios and fourished. We did everything from experimental electronic music to 'newgrass' to reggae to heavy metal. The bulk of our clients, though, were R&B (urban) and the beginnings of rap/hip hop. It was a great time! It was during this time that Richard recorded Danny Gatton, Sweet Honey In The Rock & Miles Davis (with Jim Smith -- www.muddyhole.com).
In 1990 richard sales & family, glassWing, dogs, kids and all their belongings moved to Portland, Oregon. Very soon after moving there a visitor noticed the studio and asked Richard, "Do you know anything about rap? I have a video that has two... uhhh... inebriated...wind surfers rapping. I'd like it edited to a beat and make that into music for a video I'm doing. Can you do that?" "Well, yes, I think I can!" Richard said. That visitor was a member of a consortium of video producers in Portand. When the other producers heard Richard's work they said, "Say, can you...(various requests)?"
glassWing flourished in Portland with Richard writing music for film, video, games, the web etc. He went on to write for Nike, PBS, ESPN, NPR, Apple, Safeway, Intel, The Oregon Symphony... and many more.
In 2003 the Sales family decided to retire to Vancouver Island B.C. Richard thought he would focus on organic blueberry farming and his own songs. He was looking to pretty much retire from the 15 hour a day world of music. That ended when he heard his daughter Hayley's first songs. The future became immediately clear and he began developing her as an artist.
The farm is gorgeous - photogenic fields, 13 acre cedar forest with trails, two ponds, 700 organic blueberry bushes producing around 7,000 lbs of blueberries per season, a beautiful Bed and Breakfast that can sleep four (or more depending on your willingness) - available on arrangement. It's a great place to retreat and focus on music. A highly creative yet relaxed, natural environment.
